Yap Hup Kee @ Pudu

My family has been coming to Restoran Yap Hup Kee @ Pudu to eat chee cheong fun and yong tau foo for years.  The place is quite easy to spot with its standout red painted shophouse and trail of tables to the next few shoplots.  You can read my review from three years back here.

They have two other branches, Yap Hup Kee Palace (in Kuchai Lama) and Yap Hup Kee Steamboat (in Mahkota Cheras) though I've not been to these two as we always patronise the one in Pudu (the original shop).

They're most well known for their Chee Cheong Fun and Hakka Yong Tau Foo.  One of my favourites here is the Curry Chee Cheong Fun with Dried Shrimp @ RM3.  The chee cheong fun is nice and smooth and the not too thick curry has a mild spiciness.

If curry is not your thing, you can have the Sweet Sauce Chee Cheong Fun with Dried Shrimps also @ RM3 instead.  The addition of fragrant dried shrimps is what makes the chee cheong fun here different from the rest.

Other than chee cheong fun, their wide selection of yong tau foo is the other much sought after thing here. Besides the usual choices of stuffed eggplant, bitter gourd, ladies finger, chillies, fried and soup prawn dumplings and various fried stuff, there are also vegetable options with some unique offerings of four angle beans with fish paste, long beans and broccoli wrapped in fu chuk, luncheon meat wrapped in fu chuk and fried intestines.

As usual, the fried items are our favourites.  As these are Hakka yong tau foo, I believe the fillings are a mixture of fish and pork, perhaps some but not all the yong tau foo types.

And our top, top picks are these two...the stuffed bean curd and fish cake (my husband's and my favourite respectively).  The bean curd stuffing has this fragrant and savoury taste of salted fish in the filling...so yum! ^.^

The fish+pork cake has a less bouncy texture than most of the ones I've eaten coz these ones are made with a mixture of fish and pork.  I think they call this their Special Fried Ham Cake (from the menu displayed at the yong tau foo counter).  It may be denser but it's also a lot tastier...and pricier! ^o^

Of course, another well-liked yong tau foo is the fried eggplant...sometimes if you're lucky, you get a thick slice like this.

Another must-have for me is the fried wantan....and the one here has salted egg yolk in its filling.  Yet another ingenious way of serving us luncheon meat...wrapped in bean curd sheet! ^_^

Then there's the easy-to-please fried bean curd sheet and bean curd roll.

A must-order for my son is the fried fish fillet and the vegetarian mock duck (wrapped in bean curd sheet).

A point to take note is all the yong tau foo on display have already been partially cooked and that they will re-fry your selected yong tau foo so that they're served to you with maximum crispiness.

Most of the yong tau foo types are priced at RM1.50 (some could be more) like the fish+pork cakes @ RM4/pc.

They also do a decent BBQ fried intestines @ RM5 a bowl for some chewy goodness.  They used to allow ordering by pieces but not anymore...and a bowl full of it is too much (so we don't order them nowadays).  I've also tried both the soup and fried prawn dumplings ("sui kow") but these didn't compare to the better ones I've had.

Another thing worth mentioning is their complimentary soup that comes along with any order.  It's always the same soup base...one made with "cha choy" (preserved Sichuan vegetables) that brings a salty-with-a-spicy-hint to the taste of the soup.  If you've followed my blog long enough, you'd know that my family don't drink soup (or eat soup noodles) but this soup is the exception...lol! :D

For those who love soup noodles, try the Minced Pork Loh Shi Fun (in Soup) @ RM6 with a tasty soup base and flavourful minced pork.

My Personal Opinion

A chee cheong fun + yong tau foo meal here can easily set you back RM25 per person....so it isn't all that cheap either.

But it's a place that my family visits time and time again for a satisfying chee cheong fun and yong tau foo meal.

  2. I have not eaten at this restaurant which has got a good variety! They looked delicious. I ate at the corner restaurant around the corner which is air-cond and often crowded to maximum. I have bookmarked this place too.

  3. the kuchai lama branch would be more conveniently located for me ... looks like a lot of curry for that chee cheong fan. now if only there was a place that served curry chee cheong fan with cockles :D :D :D

  5. Adding dried shrimp to the CCF definitely make the humble food more attractive in terms of flavor.
    I like wide variety and those unique YTF creations! I'll be standing in front of the YTF counter and have hard time choosing which to have if I ever visit this place >_<

    1. I don't think I've come across any other shops that have dried shrimps sprinkled on chee cheong fun....in between sheets of chee cheong fun...yes :)
