Ohla Tapas & Cocktails @ The Intermark

Ever since I read raving reviews online by my favourite food blogs, The Yum List and eatdrinkkl, I've been wanting to try Ohla Tapas & Cocktails @ The Intermark for a while now and I'm glad I finally did one Saturday evening.

Ohla is a modern contemporary Spanish restaurant and bar, in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, serving tapas and drinks (wine, cocktails and beer).  As you approach the main entrance of Ohla from the sidewalk, you can catch a twinkling night scene of Barcelona city on its glass doors.

Push open the door and you'll be greeted with a narrow but cosy dining area in a black-and-red theme with dim lighting.   There's one long bar counter with high chairs (that can probably sit about a dozen people) facing an open kitchen.  This would seem like the choice seats if you want to interact with and watch the chef in action but I think the majority of us prefer a more intimate space and sit at smaller tables and, luckily, there's an option for that now (replacing the previous long communal dining table).  These tables are just enough to fit another dozen diners or so.  As we were early, we managed to get a table for two (since only one other group of diners were there).  As the evening progressed and more diners came in, I noticed that their first choice was also the table seats (until they were all taken up).

I think I've probably eaten in one or two Spanish restaurants before this, so this could be my (and my friend's) very first introduction to authentic Spanish food.  We had our concerns at first, thinking we would be like 'a fish out of water' as we knew next to nothing about Spanish food or Spanish wines or whether we would even like the cuisine.  But all our concerns were laid to rest as soon as we sat down when a rather debonair gentleman (*blush blush*) came to our table with menus and introduced himself as the manager (we later learnt that he's Gustavo, Ohla's manager and sommelier).  He was so helpful, introducing and explaining to us the food and drinks that we immediately felt at ease (so no worries if you don't understand anything Spanish...kekeke)! ;)  He was also very friendly and engaged us in a light banter (when the restaurant wasn't as busy yet) and even introduced us to another equally suave gentleman (*wink wink*), the head chef, Toni.

Once we have placed our orders, a complimentary plate of marinated olives in aromatised extra virgin olive oil arrived at our table.  This is available in their Small Bites menu as a starter, so I was pleasantly surprised to get it complimentary.  On the plate were green and red olives, chilli peppers and gherkins that have been aromatised with spices of cinnamon, star anise, lemon, orange and black pepper.  I'm sure it's good for those who love olives but I've never been a fan (and neither was my friend), so we'll just politely say "no thanks" the next time we're served these.

We kicked off with an order of 'Boquerones' @ RM17.50 which are white anchovies pickled in vinegar, steeped in parsley oil and garlic, and served with some square breadsticks (almost biscuit-like textured) called reganas.

It was fresh and briny, but not strongly salty or garlicky, and went very well with the hard textured biscuit.

To eat, simply assemble a piece (or half a piece) of boquerone and some tiny greens on top of the biscuit.  We didn't think we would like it so much but it was so, so good...if this is a taste of things to come, I can't wait! :)

The first tapas to arrive was the Spanish Grilled Octopus @ RM34.50.  I don't know how Toni treated it but it was cooked to tender perfection before finishing off in the Josper oven!  The octopus was so tender, but not overly soft until it was mushy, with a slight bouncy texture still.  You can taste the freshness of the ocean in the octopus as I read somewhere that he brings in a whole fresh octopus and not the pre-cooked versions.

The grilled Mediterranean octopus was served on a bed of the smoothest potato mash and finished with a sprinkle of Pimentón de la Vera, a type of sweet-smoky Spanish paprika.  You would want to drink up every last drop of the sweet juices released from the octopus....and we did...with a spoon! :D  It was divine....but savour slowly as there are just six pieces! ;-)

Our next tapas was the Pan-Seared Foie Gras @ RM48 with a 62-degree sous-vide egg with black truffle shavings (actually just two pieces) on a bed of the silkiest potato puree.  The sous-vide egg was perfectly cooked with oozing goodness.  The soft and runny egg, the intense earthy mushroom flavour of the truffles (wished there were more) and the richness of the foie gras all blent together to make one heavenly bite!  Just when I thought how great it would be if I had some bread to mop up the very last bit of the oozy egg, Gustavo came over with some charcoal toasted bread slices...that's service for you!  What can I say....even the simple piece of bread was top notch with nice charred marks and a delicious smoky aroma from the bread being grilled in a charcoal (Josper) oven.

This was my first taste of foie gras and it was everything I imagined it to be.  It ticked all the right boxes...perfectly seared, rich, delicate, buttery and creamy all at once with a melt-in-the-mouth feel.  Awesome can't begin to describe how good it was!  I had left it so late to try foie gras because the dish is so expensive and I would want to be sure that it will be executed perfectly...and, at Ohla, it will.

Our final dish was a bit of a surprise in that it's not on their regular menu.  Gustavo brought to our table this beautiful looking pigeon (from Bresse, France) and asked if we would like to have it.  As I was planning to order the black rice cooked in squid ink with grilled langoustines, I asked him which was better.  He said that I could always return to try the squid ink rice but probably not the pigeon....hmmm...true...and when he mentioned rabbit was involved, I was sold.

Since it's not on their menu, I wouldn't know everything that's gone into the dish and, although they did explain how the dish was cooked, most of it was simply 'lost in translation' :D  But Toni was gracious enough to reply my email, so I'm going to describe it as best I can and hope I do the dish justice.  The pigeon dish @ RM85 featured two pieces of rare pigeon breast on a bed of Bomba rice (from la Albufera in Valencia) cooked with rabbit meat and caramelised onions and capsicum with some garlic and parsley.  When Gustavo delivered it to our table, he explained how best to eat it.  We were so excited and dived straight in and then realised we didn't take a photo of it! T_T  So, this is one half of the dish that has already been apportioned.  I guess I didn't do justice to the superb pigeon in terms of the presentation though.

The pigeon breast was pan fried to crisp up the skin and finished in the Josper oven.  The meat of the pigeon was a little raw but warm inside (as that's how it should be served...rare) as an overcooked pigeon would have been a definite 'no-no'!  I've actually eaten a piece of the pigeon breast and started cutting into the next piece before realising that I have still not taken a picture of it >.<  The meat is very lean, with a silky texture, but absolutely tender, moist and rich in taste....it was spectacular!  We were surprised that we loved it so much.  Prior to this, I've only eaten pigeon cooked Chinese style and it's usually fried or roasted (obviously a different type of pigeon).

This was the other portion.  As for the rice, Toni used the carcass of the pigeon to make a strong and reduced stock to capture the wild flavours of the bird in the rice.  The broth was so intensely flavoured that a spoonful of it...and it's an explosion of flavours in your mouth!  We mopped up every grain of that rice....it was excellente!

The meal ended on a high with a luscious dessert of caramelised bananas with brandy, house-made banana ice cream and popping dark chocolate candies @ RM20.50.

I could definitely taste the brandy that coated the caramelised bananas as I'm not a drinker and any trace of liquor, however little, will show up on my taste buds.

This beautifully quenelled banana ice cream, I loved, as the intense flavour of the banana came through distinctively with a textural contrast provided by the chocolate candies...delicioso!

Of course you can't leave Ohla without sampling at least one drink from their extensive menu (it's even longer than the food) ;D  Since I don't drink, I was definitely 'a fish out of water' when it came to their drinks.

But, luckily, Gustavo is ever ready to help and suggested the Rosado (Rose) to my friend.  Note that you can always taste the wine first to see if you like it and you're more than welcome to change if you don't.  This is Gustavo pouring out a sample for a taste test.

My friend liked it, so this is the Rosado 2014 @ RM25 a glass.  It's described as intense, fresh and red fruits and floral scents wine made by Garnacha (Navarra).

As for me, I obviously had to go with their mocktails (there are only four on the menu) and Gustavo recommended the Birjina Berdea @ RM17 (citrus, herbal and healthy mix of kiwi and basil).  Great recommendation...I loved this one, the kiwi and basil mix was very refreshing....truly a thirst quenching sensation!

I also had the Vermell @ RM15 (sweet and sour with strawberry and orange juice), my own choice, which I wasn't liking as much as the first one.  I detected a hint of bitterness through the drink.

We spent a good two hours plus here for our dinner.  You won't want to rush through a meal like this, one that you've paid top dollar for, you might as well enjoy the experience.  So, be sure to "stop and smell the roses" ;)

My Personal Opinion

There were so many things I loved about this place that I don't know where to begin.  First of all, I loved the intimate setting of the place...it's not your quintessential tapas bar as they serve food of fine dining standard in an environment that's less flashy and snobbish.  It's great for an intimate dinner for two or a relaxed dinner for four (there's only three tables for 2 - 3 and one for four, the rest are bar seatings).

Secondly, Gustavo's service is stellar!  You'll be well taken care of here and you'll feel like you're the most important person in the room.  And, finally, of course, it goes without saying that the food that Toni puts out is spectacular...from the phenomenal octopus to the remarkably exquisite foie gras to the extremely impressive pigeon to the stunning dessert.  You can feel that it's done with love and passion to make your dining experience an awesome one.

I'm aware that prices may be above the average spending of the working class (on a regular basis), but it should be fine for special occasions.  After all, we should give ourselves (or our loved ones) a nice treat every now and then.  It's perfect for a night out for two (but not suitable for children though)...and be ready to spend north of (or at least) RM150 per person (or you could try their more affordable lunch specials).

There'll be people who will ask....why spend so much for such a small quantity of food, but my answer to them is......it's the quality of the ingredients and the great dining experience you get that will be all worth it.

If you've never had authentic Spanish cuisine, Ohla will be a great introduction and one that will leave you wanting more!  Give it a try and you'll truly appreciate what they have to offer.  Come for the food....and stay for a drink...or two, maybe three? =)

I've never been more eager to return to a restaurant....until Ohla!  It was an unforgettable experience.....and a revisit is definitely on the cards!

San Francisco Coffee @ The Intermark

Who haven't been to Starbucks, San Francisco Coffee or Espressolab, right?  I should think everyone has, so why blog about San Francisco Coffee now?  Funny you should ask coz an unfortunate turn of events led me to blog about San Francisco Coffee @ The Intermark.

You see, I bought some San Francisco vouchers (from a group buying site) that had a long expiry date of 6 months.  Initially, my intention was to use these vouchers for coffee whenever I happen to be at Jaya Grocer...but then I conveniently forgot about them until it was due to expire in 3 days.

So, I had no choice but to use them all at one go on a Sunday after morning mass.  And to use all the remaining vouchers in hand, I couldn't just order coffee...I had to order breakfast too....and that turned out to be my biggest mistake and the reason for this post.

*Spoiler Alert* It turned out to be the worst western breakfast I ever had!  Don't say I didn't warn you...about the breakfast, I mean!

This is the Big Breakfast @ RM14.90 with some low quality processed ham and sausages, poached egg, potatoes, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes and toast.  Does that look scrumptious to you?

If it remotely does, this should kill it off for good...this is how the poached egg looks like on the inside :'(  It's not only way, way overcooked....it's beyond dead!!

The American Breakfast @ RM13.50 with the same mass-market processed ham and sausages and 'o-so-delicious...not' scrambled eggs.  I think I'd rather have the plain toast with butter and jam...and that isn't saying a lot, is it?

The some kind of pasta @ RM10.50 (can't remember the name of the pasta) wasn't Michael Buble's 'some kind of wonderful'.  It tasted like something that was prepared some days before and put into the microwave oven to reheat.  On hindsight, I should have been more attentive to what the staff was saying...and then later remembered that she said "yeah, we have one pasta left"....err, left from when?

As I still could not finish the value of my vouchers, I had to order some (God help me) add ons to fully utilise my vouchers.

This is the Mushroom Soup @ RM4 with some pcs of bread that looks remotely like garlic bread but doesn't taste like garlic bread.  The soup, on the other hand, was so diluted and watery that even a can of Campbell soup would have tasted 10 times better!! T_T

....and some (God knows what) potatoes also @ RM4 that tasted as bad as it looked :(

Each breakfast set comes with a free coffee or tea
Iced Cappuccino @ RM11
The coffees were the only saving grace!!!

My Personal Opinion

San Francisco Coffee's tray liner says it all..."The journey of speciality coffee from seed to cup is a long one.  A lot of care and effort goes into producing the cup of coffee you now hold in your hand."  If only they applied it to their food as well (and I think Espressolab falls into this category too).  Starbucks is the only smart one to stay clear of this and focus on their coffees.

I feel that if they don't even try to put out something good, then it's better not to do it at all.  These coffee chains should just stick to doing what they do best...and that's churning out a decent cup of coffee for the masses!  Enough said.

Bonjour Garden Cafe @ The Intermark

The last time I came here was for some cakes and pastries (after an earlier lunch at Fresco with friends).  Remembering that I had a pleasant afternoon tea (or should I say coffee) experience here a while ago, I returned for a revisit to check out "what's for dinner" one Saturday evening.

The place I'm referring to is Bonjour Garden Café @ The Intermark, which has a bakery in front, to cater to all your bakery and pastries needs....and they're pretty good, I might add!

But, this time I was here for dinner.  A look at the menu and I can see that they have everything from an all-day breakfast to snacks, soups, salads, pastas, pizzas, sandwiches and main courses.

We settled for the Potato Wedges @ RM8 (from their snacks menu) as our starter for sharing.  No complaints here on a simple dish of freshly fried, crispy potato wedges.

For the mains, there was a choice of Fish 'n' Chips (RM25), Rosemary Chicken, Salmon & Asparagus, pan-seared beef Striploin (RM40) or Rib Eye (RM48).

I decided to go with the Rosemary Chicken @ RM28 which was a roast leg of chicken marinated with rosemary and served with garlic mashed potatoes and an aromatic chicken broth.

This main was accompanied by a fresh salad and lightly sautéed cherry tomatoes.

The roasted chicken leg came with a crispy skin and the chicken leg was tender and moist.  You can smell the rosemary seasoning in the chicken especially so when it arrived with a stalk of roasted rosemary sticking out from the chicken.

What was truly outstanding was the sauce which was not your typical black pepper or mushroom sauce that we're so used to seeing.  The aromatic chicken jus, that resembled a herbed brown gravy, was flavourful and delicious.

I don't usually order roast chicken (as I make them so often at home) but I was pleasantly surprised by this one and was glad that I ordered it.

The other main was the Salmon & Asparagus @ RM35 which was a pc of pan-seared Atlantic salmon served on a bed of sautéed asparagus, eryngii (king trumpet) mushrooms and a creamy citrus sauce.

The salmon skin was pan-fried till crispy but the salmon was a bit overdone for me (although I find that it's quite common for it to be cooked to this level of doneness at most places).

The soften mushrooms, the nicely grilled asparagus (the thick type) and well-seasoned cherry tomatoes, together with the creamy citrusy sauce (and balsamic reduction, I think), provided some freshness to the plate for yet another successful dish.

[#Story 1: Actually, the main courses here are enough to fill you up and (for an average eater) you don't need any starters.  That's why, we couldn't finish half the potato wedges and I asked for the balance to be packed...kinda like asking for a 'doggy bag'....and that was exactly what I got.  The waiter literally gave me a paper bag!  He just passed me the bag and expects me to pack it myself...what the heck :(  Their service was pleasant throughout the evening until this happened (P/S: this particular foreign worker actually looks kind of dumb...so that explains it)!]

[#Story 2: While dining there, I saw a Caucasian man order a soup, a steak and the roast chicken leg + a juice and a coffee....nothing wrong with that...except he was dining alone!! :D  Now we know why an American-sized portion has to be shared by two here :D]
Our drinks for the evening:

Cold Americano @ RM7

Iced Lemon Tea @ RM8
My Personal Opinion

If you're looking for a reasonably affordable eat at The Intermark, this is probably it as the other places here are more 'upmarket'.

Even a pc of uncooked salmon from Jaya Grocer will set you back about RM30...and you have to pay to get it cooked at Fresco.....and the salmon comes with 'no frills' :'(

So, it's a worthwhile place to have a bite after some grocery shopping!

Red Lobster @ The Intermark

This American chain of restaurants is well known for bringing some of the highest quality, freshest seafood to their restaurants in many countries.

With a pledge to bring the sea to our table and a tagline that says "we sea food differently", we should be in for a treat.

Ever since they arrived at our shores in late Sept (the first to open in South East Asia), I've been wanting to try Red Lobster @ The Intermark.  But, I've heard and seen many negative reviews of this place.  It's been close to 2 months now since they opened and, hopefully, they've ironed out their opening hiccups.

I have read that there were queues and (sometimes) the waiting period could be as long as 1 hour, but nothing of that sort happened when we were there on a Saturday evening.  In fact, I was taken aback by the sheer no. of wait staff that 'greeted' us at the entrance.

Once we were seated and placed our orders, we were served with their supposedly famous crumbly-cheesy-buttery-fresh-off-the-oven Cheddar Bay Biscuits.  I would say, taste wise, it's somewhere between a muffin (or scone) and a biscuit.  The interior had a crumbly cake-like texture while the exterior had a crunchy biscuit-like texture.  There was just a hint of savouriness (from the cheese) but maybe not as buttery as some would have liked.  I don't know why this biscuit didn't quite catch on here.....and I'm usually not that into biscuits or cookies...but this I liked (surprisingly)!

I ordered the Parrot Isle Jumbo Coconut Shrimps @ RM22.90 (for 6 pcs) as our starter (for sharing).  These comprised of fairly large shrimps that are coated in their signature batter and then tossed in coconut flakes and fried till golden brown.  The shrimps were fresh and crunchy, and the coconut coating lent a sweet aroma and taste to the shrimps.

It was served with a piña colada sauce (as a dipping) which had the combined taste of coconut cream and pineapple juice.  [#Tip: It's similar to a cocktail by the same name except without the rum :D]  It had sweetness (from the coconut cream) and was slightly tangy (from the pineapple juice) but I think the fried shrimps didn't need any sauce, it was good just on its own.  We enjoyed this starter very much.

The choice for our first main was the Grilled Salmon @ RM42.90 served with baked potato and roasted vegetables.

The salmon had a nice grilled flavour but the portion of fish was on the thin side, so it was a bit overcooked to what we would normally prefer.

The sides of a baked potato was ok but the roasted vegetables (made up of carrots, red bell pepper, squash, cucumber and onions) were a bit bland (not roasted enough).

And then, of course, you can't come to the Red Lobster and not order their lobsters, right?  You'd notice that their live lobsters on their menu are based on seasonal prices.  An enquiry revealed that the Maine Lobsters were selling at RM27/100g while the Rock Lobsters (from Malaysia) cost RM45/100g and those from Australia were retailing at RM56/100g.  [#Tip: From the few times that I've eaten live lobsters, I know that a decent sized lobster should weigh at least 800g (anything smaller wouldn't be worth eating).]  Wow, wow, wow...at these current prices, it would translate to about RM216 for the cheapest lobster...they're definitely not cheap!! :'(  Those rock lobsters would set you back at least RM350.  They're certainly way off my budget...even the cheapest ones!!  The ones I've eaten before cost me about RM150 (then) and, sadly, that's the max I would pay for one.  Well, if I can't afford one, I might as well get a pic of those darn lobsters!! :D

So, with live lobsters out of the question, I had to decide between a grilled maine lobster tail, skewered shrimps and wild-caught sea scallops (with rice pilaf) @ RM99.90 or Grilled Sirloin & Maine Lobster Tail @ RM109.90 which is a centre-cut sirloin with peppercorn seasoning and a grilled maine lobster tail.  I went for the latter.

The sirloin was decent, both in cut and taste.  Although I prefer my steak doneness to be medium rare, I asked for it to be cooked to medium as I didn't know how good their steaks were (since they're not a full fledged steakhouse).  A look at the pink centre and you know it's cooked right as requested.

The lobster tail was seasoned right and cooked well (with some nice grill marks).  Some of the negative reviews I've seen on this ranged from scrawny to burnt to over salted...well, nothing like that happened to us.  Although the lobster tail may be on the smaller side, we have to be realistic based on the price we paid.  At RM109.90, I feel the portion size is acceptable + we also get a pc of steak.

Let me show you the lobster meat...up close and personal!! :=)  Is that delicious-looking or what??

It was served with (reasonable tasting) mashed potatoes and the same roasted vegetables (as the previous dish).

As the Cheddar Bay Biscuits are complimentary, feel free to ask for additional helpings if you like...and since I do 'like', I asked for just an additional one but they gave me another 2 (which came piping hot this time...even better!).  So, I ate 3 all-in as it wouldn't be nice not to finish it since I asked for more (I had to summon all my strength to down the last one).

Our drinks were:

Lipton Iced Tea @ RM8.90
Fresh Watermelon @ RM9.90

Although I wished I could have eaten the live lobsters, on hindsight, I was glad I didn't.  Reason: The table next to ours ordered a live lobster and when it arrived, I saw that it was presented whole (ie. the entire lobster was intact).  I'm not sure if that was steamed or roasted (the 2 styles of cooking choice here).  That meant the server had to crack open the lobster for you (at table side) and I saw him handling it for like 10 mins (with gloves on, of course).  He had to detach the head from the tail, cut the tail open, crack the pincers and scoop out all the flesh.  That is not how I would want to eat my lobster, let alone let someone 'man' handle it for me (even with gloves).  I would have preferred if it was cut open in half to get some nice sear marks and smoky flavour on it, and served immediately (while still reasonably hot).  Plus, after paying so much for it, I think I need to 'suck the hell out' of that lobster head and shell (sorry, it's a Chinese thing)...no, no, don't take it away....or at least let me see if there's any remote possibility that there may still be some flesh left in there!! :D :D :D

My Personal Opinion

My dining experience turned out rather well at Red Lobster, with no complaints on the service, now that they've gotten their opening jitters out of the way.  Overall, the food is decent (with room for improvement) but wasn't as bad as some of the negative comments out there and certainly didn't deserve the kind of 'bashing' it received.

Prices here tip the higher end of the scale but I think it's reasonable when you can get a lobster tail + some other stuff at around RM100.

If I do revisit, I'm definitely sticking to the 'crustacean' route...and more Coconut Shrimps and Cheddar Bay Biscuits, please!
