#ewew tries Mama Instant Meehoon

Of late, I've gotten a bit tired of eating instant egg noodles and yearn for something other than egg noodles....meehoon to be exact.  So, I went searching for something new at the instant noodles aisle when I was at the supermarket.

I came upon this Mama brand (a product of Thailand)....the Oriental Style Instant Rice Vermicelli (Clear Soup Flavour) which looked promising, so I bought a pack.

pack-of-five costs RM7.50 (or RM1.50 a packet)....certainly a lot more expensive than some of the instant noodles out there.

Opening the packet, you'd find the dried meehoon with two sachets, one of seasoning and chilli powder and the other of garlic in palm oil (in the form of a paste).

The packet instructions say to pour in hot water and cover for 3 minutes (much like those instant cup noodles).  Wow, I'm sure that's bound to please some people who want to whip up something super quick for supper as it's pretty convenient with the littlest amount of washing up to do.

But I've not tried making it that way (maybe one day when I'm feeling super lazy).  I usually cook it in boiling water for about 2 minutes.

Sometimes, I'd fry up an egg and break them into small pieces and add that to the instant meehoon for a heartier meal...like when I'm having it for breakfast.

And when there are days that I don't have time to cook or just too lazy to cook, I'd even add prawns and vegetables into two packets of this Mama Instant Meehoon to make it an even more decadent bowl for lunch.

Sometimes, it could be with some pork balls, fried egg and lettuce topped with fried garlic.

Although this instant meehoon's description is oriental style, don't be fooled as this is not quite the subtle clear soup you thought it'd be.

If you've noticed the chilli flakes in the soup, you'd know this is clearly not a soup noodle suitable for young children (so be forewarned) but great for us adults! ^_*  I actually relished the kick of heat to what would otherwise have been one of those typical mundane clear soup.

When out shopping for these noodles, do be careful as there are a few other brands that look and sound almost similar to this Mama brand.

Like this Papa brand (of instant meehoon in clear soup)....


.....they even have a rice noodles (kway teow) version.

Or this Pama brand in Tang Hoon (glass noodles in clear soup).

Nope...I don't want Pama or Papa, I want Mama! ;D

This Mama brand is a pretty nice version of clear soup instant meehoon that I'd recommend for those times when we want something other than the usual egg noodles (it's certainly better than Maggi's chicken soup).

  1. I usually just add the egg into soup, lazy to cook fried egg :P
    I've tried noodles & meehoon for instant noodles but Kuey Teow and Dong Fun is new to me!

    1. I've not tried kway teow and toong fun either. I don't usually add eggs direct into the soup (unless I'm having one of those super lazy days) as that would mean I have to drink most of the soup in order to get to the egg, so I prefer to fry my egg.

  3. This MAMA brand has come a long way and still enjoys the best loyal supporters until other competitors have to design their logos using same fonts. One could see the shoppers who take buses from Hatyai to Malaysia with all the big boxes of MAMA noodles until today. When i first went to US, my luggage was filled with MAMA to the brim. It was a precious gem to keep me company for months.
    Now you have reminded me to rekindle the memories and buy the bihun to try too. Do you know that some hypermarkets refused to sell this brand and allow competitors instead? Dunno what monopoly they are playing.

    1. Why is that...to push our local brand, Maggi? Oh, I didn't know this Mama brand has such a long history already...and so popular too. I was just bored of egg noodles and saw this on supermarket shelves, so I bought some to try. I can see why the brand has such long and loyal supporters :)

    2. They allowed all the fake competitors to sell instead. I might be wrong in case MAMA was actually out of stock but I really could not find this brand in 2 different hypermarts over the years. I am aware of such monopoly sales as I am in advertising line and heard of the shelves display woes.

    3. I've experienced that in hypermarts too...that's why I don't shop in them as I can't find the higher end/priced goods. They tend to sell 'cheaper' brands which they can buy in bulk and give them a better profit, I guess.

  4. Oh, I have not had instant noodles for a long time. I did try an instant meehoon once (can't remember the brand) and I did not like it. You have made the instant meehoon very wholesome by adding extra ingredients. The one with prawns, vegetables and egg look especially good!
