Kenny Hills Bakers (Again) @ Bukit Tunku

After a satisfying family makan outing at Teow Chew Meng, we decided to look for a place to sit down for some drinks and maybe some light bites too.  Following a very satisfying dining experience at Kenny Hills Bakers before, I suggested the place as a possible venue.  Since we were in the vicinity of PJ after Teow Chew Meng, we made our way to the TTDI branch of Kenny Hills Bakers but, on reaching there, we were told that there'll be at least a 30 - 45 minutes wait for a table.

We didn't want to wait, so I suggested Common Man Coffee Roasters (when I was reminded of the place which we happened to pass by enroute to Kenny Hills Bakers).  It wasn't our lucky day coz when we reached Common Man Coffee Roasters, we were told they were closed for a private event...haiz.  We drove around for a bit to look for other potential spots but none latched on.  We also considered the Ampang branch of Kenny Hills Bakers and called ahead and was told there's also a wait for tables.  So, at that point, I suggested we might as well head to Kenny Hills Bakers @ Bukit Tunku (the same branch I visited earlier with friends) after having driven around for more than an hour.  By the time we got there, we managed to secure a table almost immediately (even though the place was still crowded) as it was past peak hours laready.

My brother-in-law requested for something with sourdough, so I got the Smoked Salmon Rillettes @ RM26 from the Toasties and Rillettes section (the other choice being a prawn rillette).  The smoked salmon rilletette featured diced smoked salmon with creme fraiche and micro herbs on toasted organic sourdough.

Loved the taste of the smoked salmon rillette with a lightly spiced cocktail sauce (Thousand Island-like) on crisp toasted sourdough.  Overall a very good bite together with some crispy fragrant curry leaves, smooth creme fraiche (or sour cream) and a dusting of smoked paprika.  This ended up to be my brother-in-law's favourite thing he tried here.

From their Organic Wood-Fired Sourdough Pizza section of the menu, I ordered an Al Funghi Sourdough Pizza @ RM36 for sharing which comprised of an 8-inch pizza with 3 types of mushrooms (portobello, button & oyster mushrooms) with mozzarella and truffle oil.  Juicy mushrooms with a lovely textured, pliable, smoky sourdough in every bite is nothing short of gratifying! ^o^

I can't believe I'm going to say that this cheese is one that I can even say I enjoy eating.  Clearly miles away from your average store-bought grated cheese (urgh!), this mozzarella tasted really good.  If there's one cheese I can tolerate and eat is mozzarella which is the cheese used in most pizzas (unlike cheese in burgers which I believe is usually cheddar)...and that's why you do see me enjoying pizzas every now and then.  There are even some mozzarella in pizzas that I don't like (those very stretchy types) but this one tasted even better than the usual melted mozzarella in other pizzas.  I think the pizza was finished off with some grated parmesan on top (parmesan is also a cheese I can't tolerate especially those extra stinky ones that come out of a bottle but this, I believe, is fresh parmesan shavings which taste very different...and very tolerable..hehe! ;)

You'll surely find a pizza to your liking as other choices include margherita with burrata, Sicilian, three cheeses, beef pepperoni, Hawaiian, portobello mushroom & spinach, Mediterranean, smoked salmon, seafood or half & half.  Their artisanal pizzas are handcrafted to order and there'll be a 20 - 30 minutes waiting period (as stated in their menu)...but I can assure you, it's definitely worth the wait.

For a sweet bite, my sister-in-law wanted waffles, so her husband asked me to order the Bananatella @ RM26 for her which I dutifully complied.  This Banantella came with bananas and nutella (of course, the hints were already in the name of the dish), a good drizzle of homemade peanut butter, a generous sprinkling of pecan crumble and homemade vanilla ice cream.

It was a dessert that we struggled to finish....as it was sweet on sweet (nutella and peanut butter)! >_<  My sister-in-law regretted her choice, she said she didn't know it came with chocolate.  She must have missed reading the ingredients description or the word "nutella" which would clearly indicate that there's a chocolate and hazelnut spread.  We tried to scrape away as much nutella and peanut butter as possible but, in the end, it was still too sweet (I had one bite + 2 chunks of banana only).

I remember when waffles first burst onto the scene some 10 years ago, it was the rage...not so much now.  If there's one dessert I don't normally order, it's waffles...coz it almost always comes with either ice cream (or some kind of cream) and chocolate sauce.  Cafes tend to go crazy with the toppings so that it's instagrammable they can charge you more...lol.  If I do eat waffles, I prefer to eat them in their original and simplest form...with just a bit of butter and a good quality maple syrup.

The last time I was here with friends, we thoroughly enjoyed this sweet pastry, so I was keen to introduce the Peach Strudel @ RM18 to my extended family.  Super thin and airy, immensely flaky and crispy, this dessert is a must-try.  It not only loooks pretty, it tastes pretty good too.

I happened to watch Daphne Iking's Best.Ever.S1 one day (which is like a local version of Food Network's Best Thing I Ever Ate) and saw this very dessert featured...and she chose Chef Sherson Lian's recommendation of the peach strudel from Kenny Hills Bakers (as the winner) over the other desserts in her Best Ever Dessert episode.  If it's good enough for Daphne Iking Chef Sherson, it's good enough for me...lol! ;)

Our drinks of OG (Orange + Grapefruit) Juice @ RM16, Iced Green Tea @ RM13, Iced Lemon Tea @ RM16, Iced Latte @ RM15 and Hot Cappuccino @ RM13.  If there's one thing cafes make tonnes of money from, it's from drinks...however expensive, people will still order drinks so that they can sit and chat!

I decided to get a White Sourdough @ RM21 to take home and asked the staff to slice it up for me (and divide them into 3 separate bags so that my sisters-in-law can each take a portion home) as the bread is too huge for one to finish (since their bread stays fresh for up to 3 days if stored at room temperature).  Even when divided into three, I still got a sufficient portion of 3 huge + 2 smaller slices.

My Personal Opinion

Some people might find the prices at Kenny Hills Bakers on the higher side (and I do agree to a certain extent) but know that their food is made with some of the finest ingredients.  It shows in the taste of their dishes, so I would gladly pay don't mind paying a slight premium for good tasting food with better quality ingredients. ^_~

The food here never fails to impress and I had just as good a dining experience on my second visit as I did on my first.  There is still so much more on the menu to try (they've got quite an extensive menu) and I've still not tried any of their well-known signature pies yet.

I can see why they're doing so well in all their branches.  Great food, quality ingredients, good coffees, impeccable service and pleasant ambience (amidst beautifully landscaped greenery for this branch) all plays a key part in their success.  In the end, this was the right branch to take my extended family to seeing that my sisters-in-law took advantage of the many great photo taking opportunities with the instagrammable spots available to them.  Do give this a try if you're looking to partake in some artisanal products with organic produce.

Kenny Hills Bakers @ Bukit Tunku

After our lovely, long-awaited meet-up together with a stunning, delicious meat-up, I knew I couldn't give up the chance of not walking next door since it was just a few steps away.

Kenny Hills Bakers @ Bukit Tunku
has been on my to-visit list for the longest time.  I first read about them from when they opened their flagship store in Bukit Tunku.  Back then, they were just a tiny half-lot bakery set up for the sole purpose of providing the neighbourhood with artisanal breads and take-away coffee.

From just a hole in the wall, they've grown and evolved to offer not only fresh bakes of amazing pastries, cakes, pies and organic breads but also gourmet sandwiches, signature pies, toasties & rilletes, soups, salads, burgers, pastas, wood-fired breads & sourdough pizzas, including their famous beef wellington, and more.

Soon, more branches opened in Desa Park City, AmpangTTDIIOI City Mall and Putrajaya, including a kiosk in Bangsar Shopping Centre, and a sister brand, Nourish by Kenny Hills Bakers at The Five, Damansara.

Since we already had not only an amazing lunch but a rather fulfilling one as well, we came over obviously for the dessert part of the meal....and the most instagrammable Peach Strudel @ RM18 was at the top of my list.  Looking at photos of the visually attractive peach strudel on social media and now seeing this in front of me, I knew instantly that it would taste as good as it looked....and I was delighted that it was.

First, you have these two layers of homemade puff pastry that's super thin, flaky, light and immensely crispy to eat.  Sandwiched between the puff pastry was a layer of chantilly cream and slices of the most beautiful-looking sweet (canned?) peaches (they must be coz they're always consistently the same in colour, shape, size and texture/ripeness...lol).  This same layer is repeated at the top and finished with a dusting of powdered sugar.

The combination of an airy, flaky and crispy puff pastry with a delightful chantilly cream (that wasn't too sweet) and juicy peaches was incredible.  I've not eaten many peach strudels in my lifetime...but I'm glad I ate this one (and I highly recommend that you do too).  Every bite is worth the calories! ^o^

Another popular choice here is their Onde Onde Cake @ RM16.  If you love the flavours of our local onde-onde kuih, you're bound to enjoy this onde-onde cake.  It consists of 3 layers of pandan sponge with 2 layers of coconut and gula melaka filling and covered with a dessicated coconut topping.

I thoroughly enjoyed the texture of the pandan sponge which was very soft and fluffy and I did too the gula melaka filling (in fact, I love anything gula melaka!) although I've to forewarn you that it's rather sweet (it's similar to eating onde-onde kuih where the sweet gula melaka will squirt out and fill your mouth when you bite into them).  This was compounded by the sweetish dessicated coconut topping as well but I found myself going back fork after fork even though it was generally sweeter than I would have liked.

The Key Lime Pie @ RM16 was another pastry of theirs that have been raved about...and if a dessert has the ingredient of lime in it, you bet I'd be interested.  It's a simple pastry consisting of a buttery shortcrust pastry filled with a tangy (key) lime curd that's topped with whipped cream and finished with a sprinkling of (key) lime zest that further enhances the strong citrus aroma.  It tastes absolutely sub-lime (no pun intended)! ;D

The key to a good key lime pie (again, no pun intended) is the use of key limes instead of regular limes as the former is known to be prized for being tart (but not as acidic) and super aromatic.  The more costly key limes have such a distinct aroma that you not only can taste the lime, you can smell it too.  As with any dessert that features lime, you bet it'll be full of zesty flavours (but expect it to be a little sweet also as it needs to balance out the tartness).

The final dessert of Strawberries & Cream @ RM26 was chosen by my friend's girls.  It's a waffle with vanilla chantilly cream, local organic honeycomb, strawberries, blueberries and organic maple syrup.

I didn't partake in this one (so I don't know how it fared) but the whole thing looked like I would get an overdose of sweetness...lol.  But it's a creamy, dreamy dessert for young girls who have the privilege to (and can) eat anything they want at their age.  My friends commented that they were surprised that the vanilla chantilly cream wasn't too sweet.  I did taste a tiny bit of the honeycomb (which is well-known for its intense sugary-rich flavour) and maple syrup which I found to be fragrant and of fair quality.

Of course, no desserts would be complete without coffees as an accompaniment.  I guess Kenny Hills Bakers said it best, "man cannot live on bread alone, he needs coffee too"....and we had 2 Iced Lattes @ RM14 each, an Iced Cappuccino @ RM14 and a Banana Berries @ RM19 for the girls.  The coffees were good.

My Personal Opinion

These delightful desserts are sure to tickle your taste buds....as it tickled mine, especially the peach strudel and key lime pie which I thought were the standouts.  I asked my friend's daughter which dessert she liked best...and (surprisingly) she went with the key lime pie (instead of her own choice).  So there you go, you know which one you must try! ;)

With the pastries and cakes hitting it out of the park, I hope to return one day to try some of their hot food...and you'll be spoilt for choice here as they're aplenty.  If you've got the cash to splash, perhaps you might want to spend it on their expensive but famous beef wellington.

Besides, there are lots more bakery items to try too like the orange polenta cake, lemon meringue pie, butter cake loaf, banana bread, croissants or their well sought-after signature pies (of fish, chicken, beef & portobello) which caught my attention.

All in all, a great place for desserts and coffee.....but a place you can't linger for too long as it's perpetually crowded with an influx of customers always queueing and waiting for a table (especially on weekends). ^_~

Cork & Cleaver @ Bukit Tunku

My last Chinese New Year (CNY) dine-out with (extended) family members (can you believe it) was in 2020 just before the pandemic struck...while the last eat-in (with them) was two CNYs ago.  These days, getting together seems to be a practice long forgotten for some...with people preferring to socialise within their own circle (as in with their own families) for fear of getting (or passing on) Covid.  That's the sad reality of it resulting in family relationships and friendships becoming fractured/distanced due to the social distancing that we practised vehemently during the pandemic.

I guess I was like that too.....but I think it's time to return to some form of normalcy, to try to put Covid behind us and not let it rule us while still adhering to safety protocols as best we can.  So, I was delighted to finally accept an invitation from friends for a get-together meal (I've not had a meet-up with my friends for 3 years)...and (thankfully) we just picked up from where we left off! ;)

For my gathering with friends, I knew instinctively what I (and my friends too) wanted to eat, something I've not had in quite a while.....bloody good steaks! ^.^  That's how we ended up at Cork & Cleaver @ Bukit Tunku for lunch on a recent weekend.

The restaurant is housed within The Stories of Taman Tunku, an enclave surrounded by lush greenery filled with plenty of dining options...and plenty of instagrammable spots too for photo-taking enthusiasists.  The downside to this enclave is that parking is an issue as it's both scarce and expensive though valet parking is available but you'll have to pay the parking fees as well as tip the car jockeys.

We chose to sit at the popular alfresco dining area to enjoy the beautiful green views and natural breeze since the afternoon weather wasn't too hot that day.

Cork & Cleaver
is both a butchery and grill where you can order directly from their menu or (alternatively) choose your meat and have them cook it for you.  We did both.  You're also welcome to buy their meats home to cook yourself.

There are plenty of meat options to choose from such as chicken (boxing, schnitzel, cordon bleu, kiev, spring chicken to all sorts of marinated chicken), lamb (noisette, leg steak, lamb rack to lamb loin), Angus beef (ribeye, striploin to tenderloin), burgers (chicken & beef), sausages (I saw at least 3 types) to even Wellingtons (beef & mushroom) and meat pies (chicken, mushroom, chunky steak, beef mince & lamb).

Once you make the choice of meat you want, it will be weighed and charged accordingly.  I chose an Angus Ribeye @ RM117.66 (318g @ RM37/100g) and an Angus Striploin @ RM79.36 (248g @ RM32/100g), photo above shows our striploin being weighed. ^_~  The one thing I didn't notice displayed at the meat counter that day was the availability of Wagyu beef (though they have some Wagyu dishes on their menu).

First, we got an appetiser to share, the Pan Seared Scallops @ RM69 served with a roasted red pepper sauce, toasted pine nuts and a few sprigs of arugula.  At first sight, I was rather disappointed to see such small scallops but they turned out fresh and tasty, so all is forgiven.  They were lightly charred and were succulent and sweet tasting.  I suppose you can't ask for too much seeing how pricey scallops are these days and there were 7 scallops in total for the price charged.

The roasted red pepper sauce was particularly good too (my friends loved it).  Each mouthful of a buttery scallop with the moreish red sauce and added crunch from the toasted pine nuts together with some freshness from the arugula was a delicious (small) bite to be savoured.

Next, the sides.....and they had 8 choices.  Hand Cut Fries (RM18), Sweet Potato Fries (RM18), Grilled Corn on the Cob (RM18), Creamy Parmesan Truffle Mash (RM20), Garlic Butter Mushrooms (RM20), Mixed Pan Seared Vegetables (RM20), Mac & Cheese (RM22) and finally, Garlic Sauteed Asparagus (RM38) being the most expensive.  We went with the Garlic Butter Mushrooms @ RM20, everyone's favourite.

The fresh button mushrooms were perfectly cooked...garlicky, buttery, tasty and, most importantly, well seared...no soggy or wet mushrooms here!  This may seem like a deceptively easy dish to execute but, let me tell you, I've eaten my fair share of soggy mushrooms! >_<

We chose the Garlic Sauteed Asparagus initially only to be informed that they didn't have that, so I opted for the simple Mixed Pan Seared Vegetables @ RM20 instead as some greens must be present in any meal. Simple.....but so satisfying.

The medley of vegetables consisted of red, yellow and green bell peppers, cauliflower, broccoli and yellow zucchini.  Again, they were pan seared to perfection with every piece of vegetable cooked to the right texture, not too soft nor too hard to the bite.  They were also well seasoned and you can see that they were very generous with the freshly cracked black pepper...just the way I like it! ;)

For our mains, the Angus Ribeye MB5 (which cost RM142.66 in total) was one of two meats we selected. There's a fee of RM25 for cooking each piece of meat and we get to pick a sauce to go with our meat.  You can choose from Blue Cheese, Bernaise, Au Jus, Anchovy Jus, Chimichurri and Wasabi Cream.  I opted for Au Jus...I've always loved a jus made from the meat drippings but this one was not as endearing as it was a bit lighter, with a more watery consistency, than some I've had.

As for the shining star...the steak itself, it was so tender and full of flavour.  I absolutely loved it!  Although it was cooked a little over the medium rare that we asked for, nevertheless it was so beautifully tender that it was hardly noticeable.  The steak achieved an excellent sear on both sides with a good lashing of freshly cracked black pepper to provide a nice crust.  Don't be alarmed by the generous seasoning of black pepper coz a good quality black pepper will taste fragrant instead of overly peppery.

As the steak cuts here were a little thinner than usual, cutting into a piece of medium rare meat to reveal a reddish centre wasn't possible but I commend the chef for his skillful execution of a thinner piece of steak to still yield such tenderness (the pieces in the middle were a little rarer though).  This was an excellent tasting piece of meat.

Our second piece of meat was the Angus Striploin MB5 (costing RM105.36 in total).  Again, a cooking fee of RM25 was charged but, at least for that, you get a sauce and a side salad of fresh greens.  This time, we chose Bernaise which is quite similar to hollandaise except in the flavourings used.  It was another successfully executed sauce...thick, creamy and a flavour bomb (which a friend loved).

As for the meat, this one was cooked closer to medium rare.  This was yet another bloody good steak (and yes, this one was slightly more bloody...lol).  Tender and flavourful with a nicely charred crust, just like the ribeye.  One of my friends preferred this striploin over the ribeye (my eager beaver friend already took the end piece and dipped it into the sauce before I had the chance to take a photo!).  The succulent steak was perfect the way it was...it needed no sauce as far as I'm concerned.

If you value tenderness over flavour, the striploin is probably a better bet but if it's flavour you want, go for the ribeye!  I can't choose...don't ask me to choose.....I love both! ^o^

Our final main was something from the menu, Beef Bourguignon @ RM69 featuring slow cooked Angus beef chunks in a red wine sauce with chat potatoes, carrots and button mushrooms (we got shimeji mushrooms instead).  I thought the pickled baby onions (I think they're called pearl onions) were particularly good.

The braised beef chunks, potatoes and carrots were absolutely fork tender and the red wine sauce was rich and tasty (I would have liked it more if it was thicker though) with the tart pickled pearl onions cutting through the richness.  Obviously, this dish will resonate with those who enjoy red wine (like my friends) as you can definitely taste the wine in the sauce.

The meltingly tender braised beef dish was served with some lightly toasted ciabatta bread which was the perfect vehicle to dip and soak up all that delectable sauce.

My friend ordered the Wagyu Bolognese @ RM59 for her kids to share.  This dish consists of slow cooked Wagyu chunks in a fragrant tomato sauce topped with parmesan shavings and crispy pangrattato (breadcrumbs).  I didn't taste this but it looks like yet another palatable dish.

My Personal Opinion

First of all, this was a gem of a find for meat lovers.  The good quality steaks and excellent cooking impressed us.  All the dishes we ordered tantalised our palates from start to finish but the steak was the real scene-stealer here.  They were as tender and flavourful as you'd expect from a restaurant of this calibre. Deliciousness is when terrific preparation and quality ingredients meet.  I thought the prices of their steaks were reasonable too based on the excellent taste result we had though I felt that the cooking fee is a little on the high side (I would have liked to see the price at around RM15 - RM18).

The meal was so good on every level.  But I was happy to just meat-up.....and to Eat. Drink. Laugh. Bond...again with friends after so long a time apart as a result of the pandemic.  Good friends and great food is the best combo ever (thanks guys, for the treat...muacks)!

Just thinking about it at the time of writing this is sending my saliva glands into overtime! ;P  I was so tempted to get something from their meat counter to take home (to cook at a later date) if not for the fact that we were adjourning elsewhere.

We didn't have any of the cork part (as in wine) but we certainly had the cleaver part (as in meat).  This place is a keeper for sure.  I can definitely see myself returning for good steaks and more. ^.^
