Morningwood @ Subang Jaya

On a clear and sunny afternoon last Saturday, my friends and I met for our usual get-togethers that, more often than not, turned out to be a long drawn 'food hunt'.  We started with Morningwood Cafe @ Subang Jaya for a late brunch as our first destination.

I first chanced upon this café when I saw it on the list of vulcanpost's "6 Weird Names of Actual Cafes in the Klang Valley".  I'm not sure if the name was selected on purpose (with a cheeky double meaning *wink wink*) but I read (in the Star papers) that the owners explained that someone suggested "morning" and the café has a wooden interior...and that's how the name came to be.  In fact, the cheeky names extend to their menu too (as you'll see later).

As this was our first 'hit' of the day, we knew we had to pace ourselves and not order (and eat) too much food at the first stop.  We went with a starter from their Bites menu of Tentacles @ RM15.  This was made up of deep fried squid rings coated with Japanese breadcrumbs served with their homemade tartar and arrabbiata sauce.  [#Tip: Arrabbiata is a sauce made from tomatoes, garlic and red chili peppers cooked in olive oil.]

The squid had a nice crunchy coated exterior and went very well with both the sauces.  I particularly liked the arrabbiata sauce which wasn't spicy at all.  It resembles a tomato-based sauce that's served with pasta (usually penne).

Next up was an order of Hot Chicks @ RM15 of chicken drummettes (3 pcs) and wingettes (3 pcs) slathered in a spicy-sweet-sticky sauce....it was more sticky-sweet than spicy.  The deep fried chicken wings came with some crunch while the meat remained tender.  If you like buffalo wings, you'll probably enjoy this.

I suppose any guy who sees a "hot chick" will want one......kekeke! :D

From the All Day Breakfast menu, we went with one of their more popular dishes of Skinny Dip @ RM20 which is their version of baked eggs comprising of two sunny side up eggs in a sauce of diced tomatoes, onions, red capsicums with chunks of chicken sausages and cheese (not a lot), served in a sizzling pan, accompanied with some buttered toast.

I think, because it was served in a sizzling pan, the sunny side up eggs (unfortunately) became overdone as food that is served in a hot pan will continue to cook even after it has been served (they need to tweak the cooking time a bit).  Other than that, the flavours of the minced meat gravy were respectable.  The toast was needed to mop up every last bit of the sauce and it would have been even better if the eggs were runny.  Their other signature dish here is Breakfast in Bed which is similar to the usual big breakfasts.

On their menu, you'll also find pasta (named after different colours), salads and sandwiches like Morningwood (marinated boneless chicken thigh sandwich), "Ham" Sap (layered chicken ham and chicken meat sandwich) and Orgasm (cheesy oozy sandwich).  Do you see a pattern developing here in the names of the dishes?  I'm sure you would! XD

You could end your meal with a Happy Ending which is their version of affogato (but we were saving our stomachs for ice cream at our next destination).

As this was our first stop, we needed our coffees to get us started.

Iced Latte @ RM11
Hot Chocolate @ RM12

Iced Cappuccino @ RM11
Nutella Cappuccino @ RM14

As we were leaving, we passed by their cake counter and bumped into these lovelies (which we missed trying)...frozen cheesecakes (from Purple Monkey) in flavours of peach, blueberry, strawberry, mango, durian, troblerone dark chocolate, oreo and original @ RM11 each.  They sure look good! ;)

My Personal Opinion

This few-months old café, Morningwood, which took over the space from the previous Flat White, joins the list of ever growing cafes that have sprout up in the SS15 area.

The co-owners (it seems) are YouTube celebrities though I only 'know' one...and that's Reuben Kang (who co-hosts Football Overload) because I've seen some of those episodes on Astro (he's quite a funny guy).  So, if you're a football fan, you might want to visit this place....who knows, you might just bump into Reuben (and his celebrity buddies)! ;D

Other than that, the food and coffees are decent and it's an artsy place to chill.

  1. No wonder the cafe name sounds so familiar. You should search JinnyboyTV on Youtube, he runs that channel together with Hitz.FM's Jin...

  2. Hmmm...I'm trying to imagine someone ordering that "O" sandwich and saying "I'd like to have an "O", please". I'll just point and say, I want this. I just can't say the word hee..hee... The cheesecakes do look very good. I would not have been able to resist!

    1. Even if you didn't order the 'O' sandwich, the rest of the dishes are just as cheeky to say! ;D Yeah, we wouldn't have been able to resist the cheesecakes too if we had noticed it as we were walking in.

  3. I'm not particularly fond of fried food - do they have some healthier options on the menu?

  4. My girl will surely want the squid if she sees that on the menu. Looks good. The skinny dip looks great too despite your saying that the egg was overdone. Maybe you ladies went yak..yak..yak...and did not eat it right away upon being served! Muahahahahaha!!!!! Sorry! Sorry! No joke, no fun!!!! I wonder what breakfast in bed is like - sounds intriguing!

    2. Since when did STP turn into a dirty old man....wakakaka!! :D

Hmmm, now that you've mentioned it, maybe we did go yakety yak (quite understandable when ladies get together) before we dived into the baked eggs. Ask your missus to make you breakfast in bed, then you'll know what it's like! ;D

    1. Oh, the prices are a bit on the high side, is it? I thought it was quite on par with the rest of the cafes I've been to.

  6. I cannot handle Hot Chicks and don't want a Skinny Dip either. I never take Breakfast in Bed, am not a Ham Sap person so no Orgasm for me. Too bad all of you did not have a Happy Ending.

You ate this lot as late brunch so before that what did all of you eat?

Frozen cheese cakes I want - all those with fruits on top.

    1. Of all the comments, I found yours to be the most funny, Mun. We didn't have a Happy Ending of that sort or a Happy Ending with affogato but we did end our meal...and our day...happy! ;)
