We were walking around the shopping mall looking for a place to eat and settled for Nyonya Leaf @ Sunway Velocity which is also their first opening in KL. They're a chain restaurant that hails from JB with 6 outlets and two in KL (the other being in Mid Valley).
Looking at their menu, their offerings are pretty similar to those of Nyonya Colors with nyonya kuih at the forefront of what they're popular for and good at. We were delighted to see that they have a set promotion (four sets to choose from) on weekdays for lunch and dinner.
I went for Set A (the Noodle Set) @ RM13.80 where you have an option of either prawn mee, assam laksa, chicken hor fun or nyonya curry laksa. It also includes a drink of either cincau of lemon tea with one pc of nyonya kuih.
The nyonya curry laksa was loaded with sizeable prawns, chunks of shredded chicken, large pieces of fish cake and beancurd puffs and, to my surprise, the curry broth wasn't too shabby actually.
Set B (the Rice Set) comes in at RM14.80 with a choice of nasi lemak chicken rendang, nasi lemak nyonya fried chicken or fried rice curry chicken with a free drink and kuih.
We ordered Set C (the Fried Set) @ RM16.80 which offers the nasi lemak nyonya fried chicken along with a free drink and kuih but with an added alternative of either popiah, fish ball or cucur udang (fried prawn fritters).
The nyonya fried chicken was pleasant tasting, a bit like ayam goreng berempah. What I liked most was the inclusion of a bowl of curry (that was thicker than the earlier curry laksa, almost rendang-like) which tasted not only decent but provided a sauce for the rice and made it that much more pleasurable to eat.
The free kuih included in both sets...and we chose their signature three-season kuih and pulut panggang. Their kuihs are pretty decent and look eerily similar to those from Nyonya Colors.
And finally Set D (the Nyonya Set) clocks in at RM18.80 gives you a selection of any noodles or rice (from Set A & B) of your choice with additional nyonya chicken lobak and sambal lady's fingers together with a free drink and kuih.
But if you're here on a weekend, you'll still be able to get these items a la carte at very affordable prices between RM10.90 - RM12.90. There's no cause for complaint for meals at such prices in these times of escalating costs of living.

My Personal Opinion
The curry was the surprise for me as it turned out better than I expected. From the food and taste point of view, maybe not nearly as good as Nyonya Colors but still decent considering that you can get a truly great value meal from as little as RM13.80 that comes with a drink, main and dessert (kuih)...but on weekdays only (not sure if this promotion is still ongoing though since I had this quite some time back).

I am not sure whether you are aware of the management disputes behind the NC chains like over a year ago. The main person who supplied the nyonya cakes and curries have parted ways and told us they will open their own which has similar names. Now I could guess this could be the one Nyonya Leaf. I must go and try asap.
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm not aware of any dispute between NC & NL (thanks for highlighting it). I tried to google it but found no stories on that except the one where the founder of NC was arrested for drugs possession...haha! :D If their regular supplier of nyonya kuih & curries has parted ways with NC, does that mean NC's kuih & food taste different now? I haven't been to NC in a while. I also would not know if NL is indeed or could have been their supplier previously. Let me know if you do find out (but this brand seems to have originated from JB). ^_~
DeleteThe quality of NC and Little Cravings (same bosses) at 1-U have dropped for all their kuehs and curries. I am pretty sure their original supplier have parted ways and opened their own. I will go and Kay Po to check out this new NL. I dare to ask their manager if their boss was from NC.
DeleteAnother 'nyonya' place! I'm kinda skeptical of eating at 'nyonya' outlets coz food are not up to par and mostly franchise that hire non-nyonya chef....the food tends to turn out disastrous...Good to hear that is one is OK.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I agree with you...can't expect too much from chain restaurants or franchise outlets but it's acceptable for the very affordable prices charged.
DeletePrices seem very reasonable and from your experience, the food seems quite decent. That's the sort of set meals that I like especially the rice set.
ReplyDeleteI think they have another outlet in MV but they don't have a good rating on google though. Most still prefer NC.
Deletethese brands might be a bit confusing for folks like me - i've seen nyonya colors at places like klia2, but since i'm not super-familiar with it, i might mistake nyonya leaf for nyonya colors and vice versa. would also love these mall-based nyonya eateries tackle one or two classic malaccan specials like ayam pongteh! :)
ReplyDeleteInitially when I came across NL I thought they were related to NC too...and you won't be the first to be mistake one for the other because of their almost similar names. I think NL do have ayam pongteh on their menu but whether it can meet your high Malaccan standard will be up for debate. ^_*
DeleteSeems to be pretty good value for money.
ReplyDeleteIt is :)
DeleteThose are really comfort food for me, Nasi Lemak, curry mee and Nyonya kuih, and for shopping mall standard, they are really affordable!
ReplyDeleteIn these times, we need more of these affordable-type eateries. ^_~
DeleteAsam Laksa should be removed from the menu !!! Unqualified chef, the chef can't even cook a proper Asam Laksa laugh my ass off. How could a chef replace a mint leaf to cabbage and prawn paste is missing too.
ReplyDeleteI've never tried their assam laksa...guess I know what I should stay away from here.
