Yang Mooi (Beef Ball Noodles) @ Pandan Indah

The mere mention of beef ball noodles and one name comes to mind immediately and that's Jalan Silang beef ball noodles.  Soong Kee is probably the first and most famous beef ball mee, and rightly so, as they've been around since 1945.  I used to eat at their original shop when I was young(er) but they're located in a part of town which I no longer go.

So, to get my fix of beef ball noodles, at a place closer to home, Yang Mooi Restaurant @ Pandan Indah will have to do.

My usual order is always the Dry (Hakka) Noodles with Beef Balls @ RM6.40 (for small).  The springy noodles are always cooked just right and comes with a delicious topping of pork (+beef?) mince.

You eat your noodles with a choice of either firm and bouncy beef balls or tender beef mix.....both are equally good. You can also request for pork balls if you don't eat beef (for religious reasons) but, then again, the mince meat may already be a combination of pork and beef.

And, of course, you have to eat this with their fresh chilli dip coz it just won't be the same without it.

I also like to have the Dry "Loh Shi Fun" (aka rat noodle) @ RM6.40 (for small)....

.....with "ngau chap" (beef mix).  I enjoy the really tender beef slices but not so fond of the pieces of tripe.  A word of caution though...try to stay away from drinking the soup (which is quite salty).

Stir the meat and sauce into the noodles and you're good to go!

My other favourite on their menu is the Claypot Beef Mix @ RM7 although it's not served in a claypot.  You get a bowl of really tender braised beef mix (I do like the tender beef chunks but not so much the gelatinous tendon), with softened white carrot pieces, in a very flavourful broth.  I absolutely loved the super soft braised white carrot pieces that have soaked up the flavour of the broth.

Their "sui kow" (soup dumplings) @ RM1.20/pc are quite decent as well.

My Personal Opinion

Yang Mooi serves (almost) as good a beef ball noodle as Soong Kee though their soup can be a tad salty for some taste buds.  I especially liked their braised beef mix.

They're open for breakfast till late lunch/early evening....but, come dinner time, you'll find them selling their noodles from a stall in the vicinity of Restoran Queen's (Jalan Peel).  [#Note: Funny thing was, I've seen someone commenting that this one tastes good but the one in Peel Road tastes even better...not knowing that they're actually one and the same....keke!!]

  1. Strange, I thought the soup is one of the main parts for a pork noodles or beef noodles.

    1. Yes, I'd normally eat beef noodles in soup too (usually with ngau chap)...but only at places where their signature minced meat is not offered ;)

  2. I love beef and beef noodles and I am a fan of tripe and the gelatinous bits. Too bad I don't go to this area or else I can drop by and sample the beefy goodness.
