#ewew tries Kipper Snacks with Savoury Crackers

I first came across this King Oscar Kipper Snacks when I saw it in a recent issue of the Flavours magazine (which I read diligently every month). 
 
Since I like to eat Tuna on Crackers very much, I thought...hmmm....why not a gourmet canned fish instead of the usual canned tuna.  It would be something similar to that and something I could like as well. 

So, I bought a can at RM9.53 (92g) from Mercato at Pavilion. 
 
With a gourmet canned fish, I needed some (gourmet) crackers to go with it, of course....kekeke! ;D  I decided to get these Elki Garlic & Herb Crackers @ RM6.35 for 62g (or RM10.59 for 150g) which I saw in the same magazine as well.  The 62g pack yielded 22 pcs.

These are actually lightly smoked fillets of wild-caught herring (naturally rich in Omega-3).  [#Tip: The magazine recommended that you blend the kippers with cream cheese, tomato puree and lemon juice to make a dip.]

I poured them out from the can (including the olive oil) and mashed it up with a fork (I wasn't about to wash a blender just for this).  I added some mayonnaise (since I didn't have any cream cheese) and some tomato sauce with basil (the same store-bought one I use for my pasta).

Spoon some of the dip onto a piece of cracker and......"makan" (eat)!  The first bite yielded a bit of a fishy taste but then you eat a few more and your taste buds get more acquainted with the intensely flavoured kippers.  I think it could have definitely benefitted with a squeeze of lemon juice (to bring some freshness to the dip) but it so happened that I didn't have any lemons in my pantry :(
 
The thin crackers were savoury but not salty, slightly hard but crispy, fragrant but not oily with the texture of a cracker and not a biscuit.  I guess that about describes these slightly premium crackers.  I did enjoy the fragrant smell and taste of garlic and a hint of herbs in the crackers.

So, if you want to serve a slightly more 'posh' dip with crackers (as finger food for your parties), this kipper may be a keeper! ;-D

  1. Eh I totally forgot about such a snack! I used to love having salted crackers kiap with tuna spread too! Maybe I'll make some this weekend! But not such a posh version lah XD

    1. Yeah, the tuna crackers I made with our local Ayam brand was nice too. Cracker snacks are awesome except I don't "kiap" mine....kekeke! ;D

  2. Nice looking crackers. Don't think we have that brand here. Made in? I'm ok with kippers...not really particular about fish in cans. I wouldn't mind having the crackers on their own.

  3. Eh, I also read Flavours but how come I don't remember the kippers? I've tried imported sardines in olive oil and I love it. But so expensive. I'll look out for this King Oscar Kipper Snacks just to try it at least once. Ya lah, posh fish must go with posh crackers :)

  4. A really posh snack! I can imagine this being served in English high teas. That's a lot of kipper dip you got there. How did you finish them? All with the posh crackers? On your own or with your whole family?

    1. Actually, that one can is just "ngam ngam" for the 22 pcs of crackers. I ate it for breakfast over 2 days (my family is not very adventurous when it comes to trying new foods).
