Mercat Barcelona Gastrobar @ Mont Kiara

Ever since my first introduction to Spanish food through (the now closed T_T) Ohla Tapas & Cocktails, I've been a fan....and so is one of my friends.  That's why I suggested Mercat Barcelona Gastrobar @ Mont Kiara as the dinner venue for our meet-up.

We were early, so we waited for our friend to show up and when she finally did, the first thing she (the one who is a fan of Spanish food) said to me was that the food here isn't all that great as she's been here before. Oh dear, I immediately regretted my choice and, at the back of my mind, I thought I may have picked the wrong place this time.

As with any Spanish meal, tapas is at the forefront of any Spanish restaurant's menu.  Tapas is the perfect food if you're planning to enjoy a night out with a bit of drinking as they're small savoury plates of food that won't fill you up too much thereby leaving you room for drinking.  Nice...for my friends. ^_~  These appetisers and snacks are also great for conversations and date nights, I think...light and not too clunky...hah..hah.

The first tapas we had was the Boquerones Vinegar @ RM28, a firm favourite of mine since I first tried it some years back.  For the uniniated, boquerones are actually raw, unsalted white anchovies that have been cured in vinegar (or a mixture of vinegar and olive oil) and seasoned with garlic and parsley.

They tasted absolutely divine with a tender, juicy and delicate flavour that was made even better when accompanied by slivers of roasted red pepper, topped with finely chopped chives (in replacement of parsley?) and served with tiny dollops of aioli.  When eaten with a bit of everything, it was an exquisite bite of freshness which highlights the natural flavours of the boquerones.  So, so good! ^.^

The other tapas we ordered was the Gambas al Ajillo @ RM32, an insanely popular classic Spanish tapas of shrimps sauteed in olive oil, garlic and chillies (and was glad to see all shells removed). ^_~

The Spanish shrimps were immaculately fresh, firm and sweet.  The thinly sliced browned garlic pieces added even more flavour to the shrimps and olive oil when eaten together.  I believe the olive oil used is a good quality one as it tasted really good.  Another outstanding dish.

Some slices of lightly toasted crusty bread were served with the tapas which you would want to mop up every last drop of that wonderful tasting olive oil in the gambas al ajillo.  You can also eat the bread with the boquerones as the bread is a good vehicle to soak up all that olive oil goodness (well, you wouldn't want to waste good and flavourful olive oil, would you?).

For our mains, we settled for Iberico Ribs (1/2 Rack) @ RM114 which is a popular choice with my friends after having sampled them in some of our makan gatherings before (in places like Iberico Kitchen, El Iberico and Curious Kitchen to name a few).

The Iberico ribs were tender, succulent, meaty, lightly fatty with a good spice rub that added even more inviting flavours to the ribs.  Not sure what went into the marination exactly but I'm guessing Spanish paprika is probably in there somewhere. ^_~

A nice surprise was that the ribs were served with a side dish of eggs and potatoes.  It was a poached egg with slices of fried potatoes and slivers of red peppers finished with a sprinkling of chives.

How did such a humble potato dish taste so good?  After all, they were just simple fried potato slices (crowned with an oozy egg yolk!) but one bite and my friend and I looked at each other....and she went "Mmmmm....".  It was the intensity of the potato flavour in the potato that wowed us.

They should offer this as one of their tapas and I'm sure there'll be fans.  This egg and potato dish was far better than a recent patatas bravas we had at another place (but that will be another story for another day). They too have patatas bravas on their menu here, so that will be on our list of must-try if we visit again.

But the piece de resistance had to be our other main...a 2-Pax Paella de Marisco @ RM99 (there's a 4-Pax version for RM192) which was excellent.  Paella de Marisco is essentially a seafood paella and this one was filled with Spanish prawns, mussels, clams and cuttlefish.  It was generously sprinkled with finely chopped chives and finished with a charred lemon.  All the seafood was fresh and tasty beyond mention (pieces of cuttlefish/squid are embedded in the rice).

You can smell the intense seafood aroma as soon as the dish hit the table...a
nd I was pretty stoked to see it served in a traditional paella pan (for a touch of authenticity).  The work that they do to draw out such rich crustacean undertones into the broth is commendable (saw an old copy of the menu online which mentioned the use of a lobster broth).  Lobster broth or not, the intensity of the seafood broth is what makes the whole dish so flavourful...and that's the road map to a truly excellent paella.

A squeeze of lemon and we're ready to eat.  What's better than a squeeze of lemon?  A squeeze of charred lemon, I say...lol! ;)  The rice, enriched by the concentrated seafood stock, not only had tons of flavour but was super moist and uttlerly delicious.  The moment I took a spoonful of that soft, moist, sticky rice grains, it was so full of flavour that it totally took me by surprise.  Even I who prefer lesser robust flavours was very pleased with the big, bold flavours of this paella.  It was just too good to pass up. ^o^

You can see just how moist the rice grains were from the photo.  It might look like the rice was too saucy but it wasn't so coz the sauce will continue to dry up in the residual heat in the paella pan to coat each rice grain lusciously and ultimately give rise to that much sought after crusty crispy rice at the bottom (called socarrat).  That crispy crusty layer of rice at the bottom is the result of the rice being toasted and caramelised during cooking...and it can only happen with the use of a proper paella pan (something similar to what our claypot chicken rice can achieve).

We remember our last meat-up in Cork & Cleaver where we only
had the cleaver part (as in meat) but didn't have any of the cork part (as in wine).  Then again, that was lunch and perhaps too early to be drinking...lol. But this was dinner.  Different scenario.  So.  There were only two red wines offered by glass, Segura Viudas Red @ RM28 a glass and Raig de Raim Tinto Red @ RM31 a glass.

As for the Fresh Fruit Juices @ RM18 a glass, there's also only two offered, either watermelon or orange. We had both.  Although the fresh juices weren't a very big glass but I certainly appreciated the concentrated quality of the juices, no diluted stuff here.

My Personal Opinion

The food here may be on the pricier end but I do appreciate that they were made with the best and freshest of ingredients.  Not only that but they back it up with extraordinary flavours as well.  Deserving mention (first and foremost) was their seafood paella which was by far the best paella I've had! ^o^

Even though I've only tried two tapas but both were perfectly done to yield moreish flavours.  Even the most simple accompaniment of eggs and potatoes (with the Iberico ribs) were executed to perfection (they should so include this in their tapas menu!).  They've a lot more tapas I would like to try.  You can combine a few tapas to make a full meal if you want to sample more.

It was certainly a relief (phew!) to know that my friend (the one who likes Spanish food) enjoyed the meal as much as we all did...all's well that ends well...lol.  Looks like I didn't pick the wrong place, my friend's friends (for her earlier visit) may have picked the wrong dishes...kekeke! >.<  As I've always said, not everything is great (at one place) and/or not everything suit our tastebuds.

So, if you're in these parts looking for some authentic Spanish flavours, look no further as this should be in your consideration list. ^.^

Ra.Ft Cafe/Bistro @ Arcoris Plaza, Mont Kiara

Ra.Ft Cafe (in the vicinity of KLCC) is a favourite cafe of mine, usually for breakfast and brunch, sometimes for dinner too.  The folks of Mont Kiara can count themselves lucky that a second branch has opened there in January this year.

Knowing that they'll serve up the same good food, I decided to pay a visit to Ra.Ft Cafe/Bistro @ Arcoris Plaza, Mont Kiara just to have a peep at their new place.  From the al fresco seating outside, the space they occupy seemed spacious...initially.

But once inside, it was not as spacious as I thought.  The cafe takes on the same theme (similarities are very obvious) as their original Binjai outlet, down to the decor, colour scheme and furniture, except that the seats are much closer to one another because of the smaller space overall (which includes a very small children's play area as well).  I felt that it was a bit crammed for me.

Looking at the menu, I noticed a few new offerings, among them was this Ra-Ft Dome @ RM22 featuring toasted home-made bread with home cured salmon, a poached egg and an avocado spread served with a side of rocket salad.

The home cured salmon takes on a pinkish tinge as it's reportedly cured with beetroot.

A ravishing poached egg with runny yolk lies underneath the dome of cured salmon together with a lusciously creamy mashed avocado that's so good.  The side salad of rocket leaves added a much needed fresh element to counter the richness of the creamy yolk and avocado spread.  Absolutely delicious. ^o^

I also noticed their Lunch Special (scribbled on their blackboard) of Sea Bass Fillet with Sweet Potatoes, Broccoli & Cauliflower @ RM36 and wanted that.  They were kind enough to accommodate us (even though it was breakfast time) but I then noticed they quickly rubbed away the chalked writing on the blackboard (right after we ordered).  I'm not sure what's the story with that...perhaps there's no special for weekends and that was yesterday's lunch special, maybe?  I was duly informed that there weren't any sweet potatoes, so I requested for it to be substituted with smashed potatoes (the same ones from the breakfast dishes).

The sea bass fillet was fresh with a nice crisp skin and easily flaked at the touch of the fork.  I would have loved a creamy sauce of some sort (other than the drizzle of balsamic dressing) to offer a bit of richness to the dish and, at the same time, make the fish just a tad more moist.  But, overall, a simple dish that should still please the lighter palates.

Of course, we've always enjoyed their Ra.Ft 'All in One' Breakfast @ RM32 showcasing their house-made bread, butter mushrooms, baked beans, smashed potatoes and roasted tomatoes with our choice of scrambled eggs, streaky bacon and scrumptious house-made pork sausage.

You can also chose to customise your own breakfast...we did with My Breakfast @ RM28 opting for croissant, scrambled eggs, bacon, mushrooms and smashed potatoes.  I felt that the scrambled eggs were just a hint less fluffy and creamy than the ones we had at their Binjai outlet and I would have personally liked the pan-fried bacon to have a bit more colour though they were still very fragrant and tender.

Having said that, the food here was delicious nonetheless.  Perhaps, that's how the chef chooses to do it here (I do know that's how some prefer their bacon to be done).  Or, perhaps, it was just that day.  On hindsight, they were super crowded and the food did take a bit longer than usual to arrive that day.  Right off the bat, I noticed that there's a greater Japanese clientele in this branch (compared to the mostly western clientele in their Binjai branch).

My Iced Latte @ RM10....the coffees here are still as good and pocket-friendly as ever :)

My family's sunshiny juices of Fresh Orange @ RM12.50 and Sunny Day @ RM16 (a mixture of orange, mango & pineapple) that's both refreshing and invigorating.

My Personal Opinion

The place still serves up the same good food (with the same hospitality) as their Binjai branch though, personally, this place didn't endear me as much as their Binjai outlet did.  I definitely prefer the spaciousness, setting and ambience of their Binjai branch because I like roomy spaces...but that's just me.

After having tried the Mont Kiara branch, I think I'll stick with their Binjai outlet since it's also much closer to where I live.  But having said that, Mont Kiara folks are fortunate to have a lovely brunch spot for good food, and even better coffees, that they can call their own. ^.^

Check out my earlier write-ups of their Binjai branch here, here and here for a peek at the yummeh dishes that I've had the pleasure of eating before.  If the heart of KL is too far for you, fret not, you can now head to Mont Kiara instead! ;)

La Casa @ Mont Kiara

Ever since I saw photos of this place online (especially The Yum List's), I earmarked it as a 'must visit' place in my next "makan" trip with friends.  The place I'm talking about is La Casa @ Mont Kiara.

On reaching La Casa, you'll find abundant parking spaces in the Verve Suites parking lots or, if you're lucky enough, you'll get to park by the road directly facing the restaurant.

Of the many cafes I've been to so far, I've not adored the ambience of the place as much (since Yellow Brick Road) till now plus this one felt more spacious because of the high ceilings and I was happy to see long tables that can cater to larger groups.  There is the indoor dining area but you can also choose to dine in the alfresco area.

La Casa exudes a cosy and casual vibe, yet stylish in appearance, and you can certainly feel relaxed in an environment like this that you'll want to spend many hours here.  Their Facebook Page says that they serve Italian/Western cuisine from thin crust pizzas to pastas, mains, seafood, sweet delicacies, pastries, cakes and macaroons but I also noticed some French dishes on the menu.

Although we were here at lunch time, we could still order from the breakfast menu.  We started with the ever popular and singularly most ordered item in any café breakfast menu...the Big Breakfast which is known by many different names in different cafes.  The one here is called the One Pan Breakfast @ RM32 which comes with a choice of homemade chicken, spicy Italian chicken or beef sausage, turkey bacon, sautéed mushrooms, roasted potatoes, cherry tomatoes, hash brown baked beans, two sunny side up eggs with wild rocket and toast (but we didn't get any hash brown and wild rocket though).

The sausages at La Casa are all made from scratch and the spicy Italian chicken sausage was simply amazing (not to worry, it wasn't spicy at all).  Freshly made sausages are worlds apart from those processed ones.  Everything on the plate, we were happy with....even the toast was soft, fluffy and toasted to a crisp and great accompanied by Elle & Vire French butter (absolutely creamy and decadent).  This is everything you'd want in a pan....and more!

For our next breakfast item, we went on a more Italian route (you could say) and chose the Breakfast Gnocchi @ RM28.  [#Tip: Gnocchi is basically an Italian soft dough dumpling commonly accompanied with melted butter with sage, pesto or some other sauces.]  The ones here were homemade gnocchi with pesto, chicken sausage, egg cocotte (unfortunately a bit overdone) and wild rocket with balsamic dressing.

I requested for the original homemade chicken sausage for this plate since we've already had the spicy Italian chicken sausage with the previous dish.  I definitely preferred the original to the spicy Italian one.  The gnocchi was really nice, well-seasoned, soft and fluffy to the bite.  I enjoyed this tremendously.

After two breakfast dishes, we went with pasta for our next two orders.  The first was the Teriyaki Salmon with Spinach @ RM42 which featured a pan-fried Norwegian salmon on a bed of spinach and garlic pasta finished with a drizzle of teriyaki sauce.

We asked for the salmon to be cooked to medium and it was perfectly pan-fried to that doneness.  The salmon was superbly fresh, moist and flaky.  The teriyaki sauce brought some sweetness to the salmon and the dish overall.  Only downside was that the spaghetti was a tad oily (when we got to the bottom of the plate) but it was still a very good dish nevertheless.

Our next pasta was the Duck Confit & Wild Rocket @ RM29 (as stated in the menu) but the dish didn't contain any wild rocket.  I chose linguine for our pasta and it was tossed with shreds of pulled duck confit, sundried tomatoes and bits of chillies, onions, garlic and herbs.

The pulled duck confit was rich, tender and immensely flavourful.  We were happy that this turned out to be yet another very successful and delicious pasta dish.

Although my friends and I would be heading elsewhere for dessert, there was no turning back once I took a peek of their cake counter.  But since we did order one main less (as we had plans to go to another two dessert places after this), I thought a few 'extra' desserts here wouldn't 'hurt'.....I ended up ordering three! ;D

I didn't order the Framboisier that I saw as we've already tasted one before in Frisky Goat.  A framboisier is basically a raspberry cake but La Casa describes it (in more detail) as a biscuit joconde infused with raspberry syrup, layered by raspberry butter cream and a thin layer of berries jelly, topped with seedy raspberry jam.  If this one is as good as the one from Frisky Goat, this will be a good cake =)

I ordered the Mont Blanc @ RM13 as it intrigued me from the way it looked plus I've never had one before.  [#Tip: On googling, I realised that it's a dessert of pureed, sweetened chestnust topped with whipped cream.]  Secondly, I picked the Lemon Tart @ RM12 as I was attracted by the shiny, smooth lemon curd on top.

The swirls of pureed chestnut sat on top of a crumbly cake base and the cross-section revealed a filling of whipped cream in the centre.  The dusted icing sugar on top made the cake look like a snow-capped mountain (and hence the name, I presume).  This Mont Blanc was not too sweet and it's not very common to find this cake at cafes, so try it here if you have the chance.

The Lemon Tart was made up of a mini buttery shortbread crust filled with the most luscious lemon custard that had just the right balance of tangy and sweet.  The little specks on top were lemon (or lime) zest which probably intensified the flavour.  The velvety lemon flavoured filling was totally fresh, lemony, zesty, vibrant and refreshing...all at once :)  It was oh-so-good!

Our final dessert was a slice of Sweet Pleasure @ RM14 which was essentially a chocolate cake....but just not any chocolate...it's Valrhona chocolate!  Since I didn't take a snapshot of La Casa's description of this cake, I'm just going to do the best I can with my description.  I can't recognise all the layers but I do see a layer of chocolate ganache and chocolate mousse and three very thin layers of tempered milk chocolate in between (other blogs mentioned a layer of hazelnut praline).

This one piece of cake highlighted various textures in perfect harmony, from the crunch of the perfectly tempered chocolate to the luxurious chocolate mousse and ganache, when you take a bite...and, most importantly, it wasn't overwhelmingly sweet.  It was met with a thumping approval from everyone (in fact, all three desserts did).  Like its namesake...sweet pleasure, indeed!  A slice of heaven, to be exact!

This being our first stop of the day, we had to have our coffees.  And here were the hot ones...Cappuccino @ RM11, Mocha @ RM13 and Flat White @ RM11.

The cold ones...Iced Latte @ RM12 and Iced Hazelnut Chocolate @ RM14 (a bit sweet).  All the coffees were fab!

I like the look of these cute and colourful metal-type seats, so I thought they deserved a few extra shots with my Flat White.

My Personal Opinion

Everything I tried here, I liked....and some I loved!  The terrific homemade salt and pepper breakfast sausages...I loved....they were fragrant and peppery with just the right amount of saltiness.  The gnocchi was manifico....the duck confit pasta was fantastique.

All three desserts knocked it out of the park but, if I really had to choose my top favourite....hmmm, I can't and I won't!

The menu here is quite extensive, so it'll take quite a few trips to sample everything but it's certainly a place worth returning to over and over again.  It's a place where all three components are impressive...the food, the desserts and the coffee.  A trip (or trips) back is definitely on the horizon! ;)
