It was the second Saturday of June when we found ourselves at Second Sunday @ Damansara Jaya, our third stopover for the day, for more munch after our brunch and late lunch. This food run seemed to have brought us to places with unique names like Morningwood and Fatbaby in our first and second stops earlier that day. It didn't start out with that intention in mind though.
Cafes these days come up with more and more unique names to make them stand out from the rest of their competitors, I guess. So, for this name to stick to people's minds, maybe they should offer some 'specials' and/or 'discounts' on the second Sunday of every month...wakakaka!...don't you agree? ;D
Anyway, feeling still slightly full from our earlier 'ventures', we decided to just order pancakes. There were four on the menu, two with ice cream and two without. Since we already had our fill of ice cream earlier on, we went with Sunday's Mancake @ RM19 which was a combination of sweet pancakes layered with savoury beef bacon and topped with some cooked down strawberries.
There was a generous amount of slightly crisped up beef bacon slices in between a stack of four pancakes and they were yummy. The pancakes were nice and warm...and fluffy too.
The pancakes came with a basil infused strawberry compote and a drizzle of honey. [#Note: A compote basically consists of some kind of fruit that has been stewed in a syrup of sugar and other flavourings.] The compote offered a slight tangy and not-too-sweet accompaniment for the pancakes while the beef bacon brought a savoury element to the dish. Some might find the combo of sweet and savoury a little uncommon but I didn't...I liked it!
The other pancake of choice was the Local Pankek @ RM16 which was a stack of five pandan and coconut pancakes topped with well caramelised bananas (which weren't visible as they were buried under all that coconut flakes). As soon as the pancakes reached our table, we got a whiff of the fragrant pandan and coconut which teased our taste buds. I certainly enjoyed the caramelised bananas which weren't overly sweet.
The pancakes were served with a gula melaka syrup and finished with toasted coconut flakes and whipped cream for a classic Malaysian kuih flavour...but which one? Kuih ketayap (crepe with sweet coconut filling), maybe? Or perhaps onde-onde (glutinous rice balls with gula melaka filling)? You decide! ;)
As you already have the sweetness from the caramelised bananas and coconut flakes, make sure you drizzle the gula melaka syrup sparingly if you have a low tolerance for sweet stuff.
The other two pancakes on the menu include Peppermint & Chocolate Chip Pancake (peppermint flavoured pancake with chocolate chips, almond flakes, fresh strawberries, topped with vanilla ice cream and drizzled with chocolate sauce) and their latest addition, the Orange Poppy Seed Pancake (orange flavoured pancake, enhanced with poppy seeds for extra texture, served with orange crème anglaise, marmalade, almond flakes and topped with vanilla ice cream). Personally, I think I would quite enjoy the orange one (but not the peppermint one since I dislike anything minty).
The not overly sweet pancakes were great washed down with a tangy, refreshing glass of Fresh Orange Juice @ RM10.
My Personal Opinion
If you like to partake in pancakes, you can certainly give this café, that has been opened slightly more than two months, a try. They're more than decent in terms of taste and textures. Great for breakfast...or tea....or anything in between!
And.....you certainly don't have to wait till the second Sunday to go to Second Sunday! ;D

how about THIS Sunday :)
ReplyDeleteI'm sure they welcome you any Sunday....or any day for that matter! ;)
DeleteI wonder why they chose such a name - would be bad if everyone takes it literally and go only on the second Sunday every month. Pancakes sure look good and ooooo...I see bacon! I would prefer pork though. Drool! Drool!
ReplyDeleteThe fact that you sit up and take notice of their name already says that the name is unique.
DeleteThis one is much closer to my place so I should check it out! I haven't had a proper pancake before and these are such fancy ones. The one with bacon sounds interesting. Hmmm...or shall I have the pandan coconut one? Ah...choices....
ReplyDeleteWhy choose.....have both? I'm sure you can handle it! ;D
DeleteBad name for a cafe, I don't like Sundays at all, it reminds me that TOMORROW IS WORK DAY AGAIN! :/
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you don't mean what you say of not liking Sundays.....it is a rest day after all! :D
DeletePancakes, yum!
ReplyDeleteYum indeed! =)
DeleteI think I will try the minty pancakes because of the fresh strawberries. What other food do they have on their menu?
ReplyDeleteYour idea is very good about giving special discount on the 2nd Sunday in line with their name. I hope they read your post.
I hope so too....but we know it's not going to happen when it's a weekend! I didn't look through the entire menu but they have breakfast staples on their menu with some salads and pastas, I think. You'll probably like this place as they have some healthy breakfast options like yoghurt and muesli.
DeleteI only pay for food that needs a lot of cooking. Food like yoghurt and muesli, there are many good choices from the supermarkets so I will buy them and eat them at home since no cooking is required.
DeleteOh, I see....that's understandable! ;)
Deleteheheh, i wanna see a sequel called Third Thursday or Fourth Friday! :D
ReplyDeleteWe all love good sequels....haha...it'll probably be coming soon! :D
DeleteNot really can accept the savory + sweet combinantion of Sunday's Mancake :P
ReplyDeleteYeah, savoury components with sweet pancakes are quite common these days ;)
