6 Places for Pillowy-Soft, Fluffy French Toast

Besides a belly-good big breakfast, one of my other breakfast options is the French Toast which is my favourite way of having egg and bread together (especially if I want to go down the sweet route).

So, what makes a good French Toast?  For me, it has to have a soft, pillowy and fluffy texture with slightly crisp edges.  It also has to have an eggy taste without being soggy.  Here's a list of some of my preferred choices for the fluffiest French Toasts I've had the pleasure of eating thus far.

Breakfast Thieves' My French Lady brings fresh tangy flavours to their french toast with raspberry cream, lemon curd, berry coulis and thyme-infused strawberries.  One of the most well-executed (certainly the thickest) french toast I've ever eaten! ^.^  Sadly, it came to my attention recently that my favourite french toast recipe has been tweaked and is now served with black sesame paste, crisp kataifi wrapped banana and coconut mousse though my beloved zesty flavours of lemon and berry are still there, so I guess it should be alright. ^_~

The pillowy softness of Yellow Brick Road's I Wanna Be Kaya is another good interpretation of french toast with poached pears, coconut mascarpone cheese, caramel kaya sauce, strawberries and nuts.

Common Man's Fluffy Brioche French Toast is ultra soft and super light that comes with a nutty crumble, berry compote and maple syrup.  And then it's taken up a notch when paired with a premium vanilla ice cream...so decadent, so good! ;)

One of my earliest introductions to a good french toast was when I savoured The Red Beanbag's Classic French Toast (way back in 2013) with caramelised bananas, fresh strawberries and maple syrup.  The difference with this french toast was that it was coated in almond slivers for that extra crunch and fragrance.

My latest favourite, Ra.Ft's French Toast with Bacon & Maple Syrup, is one made with French brioche bread (yes....brioche is best!) giving rise to one of the fluffiest I've had ever eaten.  And then they double your pleasure by topping it with crispy, caramelised bacon...what more can you ask for?  It's french toast heaven! ^o^

I'd like to end with one that's quite left-field...Yut Kee's French Toast.  Slightly odd and unusual to some but I wanted to include it as this is french toast in its simplest and most traditional form.  It may be just a piece of egg battered bread that's fried till you get frizzy strands of egg at the sides (served with homemade kaya) but it evokes a childlike response of familiarity that I like (this is the one we ate growing up).  Feels homey, tastes yummy! ^_^

I think the key to a good French Toast is definitely in the choice of bread used.  The bread should be soft, rich, thick and fresh...like brioche.

If you're fans of an egg-soaked bread kind of breakfast, then these French Toasts may be worth your time and effort to seek out...you won't be able to put your fork down! :)  My road to pillowy-soft and fluffy French Toasts continues.....

    1. Maybe Ra.Ft's French Toast can please you being both sweet and savoury (from the bacon) at the same time? ;)
