Cookie Got Injured Yet Again!

Haiz, it has just been a few months since his last injury....and Cookie got injured again...but this time his injury was the worst he has suffered since here and here.

Cats are territorial and it's in their male DNA to fight to defend their territory.  Cookie is no different...he just doesn't know that he got no more balls (through no fault of his) which makes him not much of a fighter! >_<

The thing is, when your cat is injured, sometimes you don't even know coz you won't be able to see the wound immediately.  And cats hide pain (or illness) pretty well but you'll kinda know when they're not quite themselves coz they'll be sleeping more.

You'll notice a pattern of them wanting to go to a quiet corner in your house, don't want to be disturbed, sleeping more (on something soft)....and looking absolutely miserable! :'(

And he'll also start licking where the wound is repeatedly.

After a couple of days, you'll finally see the puncture wounds clearly (when it starts to heal).  His repeated lickings (and this time it was near his neck) will make the patch almost "botak" (hairless).

Initially, I thought that was all (the bite) until I began to notice that one side of his face seems to be swollen (coz one eye would look smaller than the other).

And that's when I realised that there was something more alarming.  It's what I later knew as cat-fight abscess.  Abscesses occur when cats are bitten by other cats during fights.  It took about 2 weeks from the initial discovery of the swelling to full blown swelling.

The bacteria introduced by a cat's bite (darn whichever stray cat that did this to Cookie) causes the area to be swollen and pus to form.  That's why it's best to see a doctor and get a shot if we (ourselves) get bitten (or scratched) by a stray cat.  God knows what bacteria or toxins they carry.

Then one day, the abscess finally ruptured and blood flowed out.  Yeah, I know...it looks terrible, right? T_T

I tried to clean the blood off as much as I could with a wet tissue wrapped around a stick (through the cage) as he wouldn't even let me near.  Though it wasn't a very pretty sight, you could tell that he felt much better after it ruptured.

I took him to the vet where he got an injection and took home some antibiotics.  The vet also tried to clean the wound but Cookie, of course, didn't let the vet touch him either.  The vet assured me that once the pus pocket had ruptured, everything will be fine and he'll heal naturally.

After his return from the vet, he seemed more relaxed (and probably glad that his face finally 'popped')...and was feeling much better.

This was 5 days later, the skin is drying up and the wound is healing nicely.

A few more days and he was back to his normal self....and enjoying his snooze :)

This happened in mid-November to early December (and I'm only writing about it now), so (no worries) Cookie is all better already...and back to his handsome (and mischievous) self! ^o^

I'm sure I haven't seen the last of his fights...but I hope he'll at least come out victorious in a few of them! ;)  It's worse during mating season as it attracts more male cats to the area.  Haiz, my Cookie can't even "do it" but have to defend his territory from all these invading sex-crazy male cats.  So, if you're thinking of keeping a cat, get a female (for peace of mind)...lol! :D

  1. Oh dear! When I reached the photo where the abscess ruptured, I was like OMG! It looked so scary. Poor Cookie was in a lot if pain and the great thing when an abscess ruptures is that all that pressure is released and the pain subsides. I am glad Cookies has recovered. He is still as handsome as ever :)

    1. Cookie: Handsome as ever? I agree with you on that! ;) Yeah, I was waiting for the abscess to burst...wouldn't we all feel better after that.

  2. Oh no! The initial injury does look quite distressing ... thankfully cookie's general health is good enough that the healing goes smoothly, complemented by his owner's care and effort! :) hopefully the fights become less intense as he ages ...

    1. Cookie: Unfortunately, as I age, I'll probably lose even more fights...haiz! :( And yes, my 'mommy' takes very good care of me :)

  3. Walau-Eh! You are such a good story teller and showed by by bit, frame by frame of your darling cat. Goodness! I really had a big goosebumps to see the injury! Cookie must have suffered the pain so much and they cats cannot even tell us. Poor pussy cat.
My family used to own a cross Persian cat and we had to comb its thick fur daily, so we could see right away if there were any wounds. Anyway that cat of ours was good for nothing and stayed like a coward Prince. I miss our cat who had gone to heavens.

    1. Cookie: Looks like your coward Prince has no balls (literally, haha!). Me, I still have my balls (albeit a little small), so I'll still fight for my turf.
