Just One Food - Texas Chicken

A branch of Texas Chicken (TC) opened in my neighbourhood some months back but it took a while before I made my maiden visit to the outlet.

I don't like to eat fast food fried chicken all that much but I was curious to know how it would fare against the old, tested and tried brand of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC).

So, I bought a two-piece chicken (spicy) set @ RM13.35 which came with two pieces of fried chicken, one honey biscuit, a regular mashed potato and a coke.

On another visit, I had the two-piece chicken (original) set @ RM13.35 which featured two pieces of fried chicken, one honey biscuit, a regular coleslaw and a coke.

At first bite, the batter of the fried chicken was definitely very crunchy...just as advertised...."a lot of crunch in a small package"...and I said to myself, hmmm, this is much better!  Then I took a few more bites and realised the batter didn't have any flavour, nothing like the savoury, well-seasoned batter of KFC.  It was the same with the spicy flavour, other than the slight spiciness, the batter was bland.  In fact, the batter tasted a bit floury to me.

The fried chicken, on the other hand, was moist and seemed fresher than KFC's coz I've come across blackish bones on some occasions in KFC's (chilled or frozen) chicken.  Also, TC's chicken pieces were much larger compared to KFC's.

When I had the (spicy) chicken set, it came with mashed potato and the taste of it was no where near KFC's version.

But the (original) chicken set came with coleslaw.  The coleslaw dressing, once again, was a far cry from KFC's version.

As for TC's honey biscuit compared to KFC's bun....I wouldn't even call this a fight!  TC wins with its honey biscuit...hands down! ;)

TC's soft, fluffy and crumbly honey biscuits, made with butter and brushed with honey, were slightly sticky-sweet on top with a light fragrance of butter (although it could be more buttery).

The biscuits reminded me of the Cheddar Bay Biscuits I ate at Red Lobster although those biscuits were a lot nicer than TC's honey biscuits.

Even though KFC chicken may be less fresh (at certain outlets) and smaller in size, ultimately it's the skin that matters when it comes to fried chicken.  It has to have the crunch but it also has to have the flavour.

In the end, if I want fast food fried chicken, my choice is still the undisputed KFC for the taste of the better seasoned flour that's used in the coating of the chicken.  Probably that's why TC, even with its brighter, newer, bigger and more comfortable space is still less crowded compared to KFC (at least the outlet in my neighbourhood).

But I'm certainly attracted to their honey biscuits which (for me) is the best thing here.....and I definitely see myself returning for them.

The Honey Biscuits @ RM4.60 (for 3 pcs, one for RM1.70) make for a quick and simple breakfast.....with a cup of coffee (RM3.60) ^o^  Eat it while it's hot and fresh-off-the-oven (especially in the mornings)...though three may be one too many....two is perfect for breakfast and one for tea later.

Texas Chicken may not have won the fried chicken showdown but, honey, I'll be coming back for those lovely honey biscuits of yours.....and that's a promise! ^_*

  1. I agree with you that the batter is lacking in flavor. They need to seriously work on that. But I do like it that the chicken is moist and fresh. I also love their biscuits but would prefer a savory one. Been there once and haven't gone back mainly because I hardly eat fast food these days :)

    1. I hardly eat fast food too but just wanted to try to compare the two. So, you found the batter bland too...Hi 5! :D

  2. Hmm, I guess the weak points that you noticed escaped me, because I don't consider them at all. To me, the skin is all about the crunch. More crunchy = win, simple as that. Also, I got the slaw' that time, and to me, the slaws from both joints are crap. Crap vs crap = same.

But the biscuit. Of course we would go back for the biscuit! Oh the biscuit!!

    1. Since more crunchy = win, then Texas Chicken is the winner for you! ;)

  3. I don't eat the skin so hahahaha I have no business eating fried chicken in that case but I like the honey biscuit though I prefer the savoury one from Red Lobster. Let us see whether Texas chicken can outlast Popeye chicken.

  4. texas chicken has quite a few die-hard fans who insist it's better than kfc ... personally i tend to drop by whichever outlet is more conveniently accessible, and that tends to be kfc, since it's much more established and has so many more branches. but it's good that texas is around to keep kfc on its toes and prevent a 'monopoly' on franchised fried chicken :D

    1. Yup, a little competition will ensure KFC up or maintain their game :)
